This is a follow-up to another post, written before Civil War came out. So I’ve seen Civil War twice now, and liked it both times. Now that Marvel’s Phase 3 has officially gone into full swing, let’s take a look at what the film set up for the rest of Phase 3.

Whilst Iron Man, motivated by guilt over his actions that prompted Age of Ultron, is all for the act, Captain America is not. The Avengers are torn into two factions, and the schism widens as war erupts between them. All the while, some new players enter the game…

Marvel’s Doctor Strange brings the magic

Holding a Doctor Strange book, director Scott Derrickson officially announced on his Twitter account that filming on his Marvel project had concluded about a week and a half ago. Having commenced filming in Nepal during November last year, production moved to London for the next several months, only recently filming a few action sequences in New York City, in which actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelson were seen.

But who is Doctor Strange? Well, to put it simply, Doctor Strange is the man who punches out Cthulhu and keeps creatures that would make it scream away from our dimension. A dimension-hopping, magic wielding badass, he is the Sorcerer Supreme. The mightiest humanoid in existence.

And now, we have been graced with the long-awaited Doctor Strange trailer at long last.

The Batman film + things we want to see in it

So after Batman v Superman, the question on everyone’s minds – probably including Warner Bros. – was very likely: when is the Ben Affleck’s Batman solo film? Well, that’s a little tricky, because according to his agent, he’s only contracted to don the cowl again for the two Justice League films releasing in 2017 and 2019. That’s three times he stars as Batman in four years…which is a whole lot of Batman. Understandably, they might decide that it’s could risk over-saturating fan’s appetites.

It’d be remiss of me however if I didn’t point out that in several reviews – both from fans and from the critics (most of whom slammed the film as being dull and a failure) – that Ben Affleck’s Batman was the best received part of Batman v Superman, except perhaps for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Morever, Ben Affleck confirmed in an interview a while ago with DC All Access that he and Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment, were collaborating together on a project which he didn’t name at the time.

Bright days are here for Warner Bros and their fledgling franchise, because today at CinemaCon, the CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment officially confirmed that a Batman movie starring Ben Affleck had been greenlit by the studio! Moreover, it has since been confirmed by his agent that Affleck had indeed written a script for a Batman movie. Zack Snyder, a director and architect of WB’s burgeoning franchise, has even confirmed that taking the directorial position was practically a “prerequisite” to go ahead.

DCEU News: Beyond Batman v Superman – What’s Next? (Spoilers abound)

batman-v-superman-poster

So I watched Batman v Superman twice thrice now, and I loved it. I understand that that’s not for everyone and I respect their opinion. I ask only that you respect mine. Back on track – now that Warner Bros’ tentpole film has entered the market (and seems to be killing it financially, if not critically, at least for now), we can’t help but wonder – what comes beyond Batman v Superman? And yes, we are going to be heading into spoiler territory, as some of this post is based on the Easter eggs shown in Dawn of Justice, as well as interviews with people given after the film was released (and some before, as well). You’ve been warned.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Film Review

batman-v-superman-poster

Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Gal Gadot

Directed by: Zack Snyder

Written by: Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer

What’s it about?

In the film Man of Steel, Superman ended up fighting a fellow Kryptonian, a man named General Zod. Their battle ended up pretty much destroying an entire city. Batman is not amused, particularly since Superman destroyed Wayne Tower in Metropolis, killing pretty much all of his employees.

He views Superman as a threat to humanity and that with his current near godlike status, he could become a dictator, worse than Genghis Khan and Julius Caesar, Hitler and Stalin…because he truly does have godlike power. Lex Luthor, tech mogul and billionaire shares Batman’s concerns.

For his part, Superman views Batman’s brutal methods of dispensing justice as excessive and a domestic terrorist. And when they finally clash due to the machinations of Lex Luthor, the world is changed forever.

Russo brothers talk how an Iron Man recasting could happen

In a recent interview with Forbes, directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016) and both parts of Avengers: Infinity War (2018, 2019) Anthony and Joe Russo talked about Captain America: Civil War, which releases in about a month and a half, and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Phase 3 goes forward. Journalist Simon Thompson asked them as to what they thought of recasting Iron Man, who has been played since 2008 by Robert Downey Junior, and is expected to do so all the way to 2019.

TS

Both directors were reticent, saying ‘It’s almost impossible to replace Robert, he’s the biggest movie star in the world’. They did suggest however that when Downey was finally done with the character, we might see Iron Man disappear for a while, so as to provide a generational gap that would hopefully alleviate any potential successors from the shadow of Downey’s portrayal. They also pointed out that ‘There are so many characters in the Marvel universe that can pick up the ball and run without it through the next phase or two before you need to see Iron Man again, frankly’, which is very true. With the new heroes that have been introduced, and will be introduced going forward into Phase 3 – Ant-Man, Wasp, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) – there’s more than enough substance there to carry the MCU for several years.

Do you think that when RDJ is well and truly done with Iron Man, the role should be abandoned – after all, it IS a very, very tough act to follow – or should Marvel follow the Russos’ suggestion?

In the meantime, we’ll see RDJ’s Tony Stark/Iron Man very soon when Captain America: Civil War enters theatres.

Lego Batman Teaser Trailer

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the debut of an all-new live-action Batman played by Ben Affleck, there’s another Batman in town, and he’s been here since 2014…the LEGO Batman. First appearing in The LEGO Movie (2014), Will Arnett’s LEGO Batman proved to be so popular that Warner Bros. greenlit a sequel, as well as spin-offs: The LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, and The Billion Brick Race.

A trailer has just dropped for The LEGO Batman Movie, and suffice to say, interest piqued. The official synopsis reads:

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO® Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, confirmed a while back that the film’s premise is based on the question ‘Can Batman be happy?’. Grouchy, self-concerned, not to mention hilarious, Arnett’s satirical take on Batman seems set to continue, with him hilariously clueless re: his own loneliness. At least, until Robin and Batgirl enter his life. With Batman being largely defined by his darkness, and singular dedication to his crusade – to the exclusion of everything else – it’ll be interesting to see how the filmmakers answer that question.

The LEGO Batman Movie stars Will Arnett as Batman (Bruce Wayne), Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Michael Cera as Robin, Zach Galifianakis as the Joker and Mariah Carey as Mayor of Gotham City. The LEGO Batman Movie releases February 10th 2017.

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer Analysis

This year is a rather busy one for comic book fans, with Warner Bros Pictures, Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox all releasing two superhero films this year. On the DC side of things, WB releases its tentpole film which is intended to jumpstart the rest of the DC Extended Universe in a week, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, following up with Suicide Squad in August. On the Marvel side of things, Marvel Studios is releasing mega-crossover film Captain America: Civil War in about a month and a half, and following up with Doctor Strange, an origin story starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the man who will become Sorcerer Supreme, who defends the world from Cthulhu level beings.

With all the focus on Batman v Superman and Civil War – in large part due to the clash between such iconic superheroes in both films – it’s easy to forget that X-Men: Apocalypse will be releasing in cinemas in just a few months. Thankfully they just dropped a trailer and it’s certainly intriguing.
